 Once we got bored of visiting temples and vomiting noodles in hapless ramen shops, we spent the night at this hole-in-the-wall guest house. In Tokyo and Kyoto you can find these cheapo houses, mostly catering to foreigners going to Japan to illegally teach English and looking for someplace to stay for a few months. The accomodations were ok enough (for 2000 yen a night you get the hardest bed in the world and a pillow apparantly carved out of wood), but I stayed up most of the night talking to the other people staying - a Korean college grad visiting some relatives, a Dutch couple on their (apparantly rather cheap) honeymoon, a former middle-school principal who quit his job a few months ago and took up a life of adventure teaching English - and trying to make up for the sleep I didn't get the night before.
