TOKI by Atari Ok, so Toki isn't nearly as popular as Nintendo's famous mascot, but on the Lynx he's almost (but not quite) a star. It's a terrific translation of the not-so-successful coin-op, but you can't fault the folks who did a masterful job of converting what was basically an average game to begin with. As Toki, your goal is to rescue the kidnapped Miho from the clutches of the evil wizard Vookimedlo. Toki must trek across five dangerous lands packed with some wacky creatures that you need to either avoid, blast with your ape breath or squash. Along the way, you'll be climbing through perilous underground caverns, crossing treacherous forests and even diving into moats filled with deadly sea life. And you only have a limited amount of time to accomplish the task. To make the task somewhat manageable, you get four lives and two continues, but even then, it's not a cakewalk. There's also a wide array of power-ups and bonus items like rabbit shoes (to jump extra high) and helmets (for temporary invulnerability) that help you in your quest. Just like its arcade counterpart, Toki's graphics are colorful and very detailed. The game appears to utilize the Lynx's full color pallete and paints smooth animation and sharp, detailed graphics. The light-hearted music compliments the action well, and the digitized sound effects are crisp and clear. While not overly complex or difficult, the action is fast-paced enough to keep things interesting. The tight and easy to learn controls makes it easy for beginners to pick up and play as well. The lack of strategy and its generic platform action is somewhat redeemed for by the variety of enemies and the high amount of variation in each stage. Overall, it's a decent enough side-scroller, but probably better suited for youngsters.
