AGH Jaguar Review:
PITFALL: THE MAYAN ADVENTURE

by Atari

Recreating Pitfall! for the modern age is a no-brainer. No Activision game changed the face of gaming as much as David Crane's masterpiece. When it originally appeared on the Atari 2600, its unique action/adventure theme inspired the likes of Super Mario Bros., and Pitfall Harry even had his own Saturday morning cartoon show. While the updated version of Pitfall! holds its own against other games in the same genre, don't expect to see Harry make an encore appearance in television anytime soon.

Basically a modestly enhanced version of the SNES and Genesis game that appeared a few months back, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure lets players take the role of Pitfall Harry's son, Harry, Jr., who must rescue his father who has been seperated from Junior while exploring a Mayan temple in South America. You'll explore through various mystical places and while avoiding dangers such as monkeys and temple spirits. Your primary weapons are a slingshot, boomerang and smart bomb (!) that can take out most of your enemies on screen. Powerups such as a temporary time freezer, chili peppers that gives Junior super strength and Sacred Hearts that restores your health are among the items that aid you along the way.

Gameplay is reminiscent of 2600 Pitfall!; you'll be doing lots of swinging from vines and jumping over pits over ten locations, starting in the Jungle of Ceiba and ending in the Tikal Temple. But a slew of new moves really juice up the action. And as you'd expect, the graphics have been greatly enhanced.

While it's a more than satisfying platform game, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure doesn't have nearly the impact as the original game did on the Atari 2600. The graphics, animation and game design are largely standard fare and what you'd expect in a modern platform title, and while it impressed on the SNES, everything seems uninspired on Atari's 64-bit Jaguar.

A solid game that preserves much of what made the original so special, but one that doesn't break any new ground compared with other games in the same genre.
