by Atari Flip Out supposedly takes place on Cheese Planet (the Planet Phrohma) and the plot is pretty senseless so I'll skip it. Basically, two sets of tiles, one on top of the other, fills a 3 by 3 grid, and your job is to match each of the nine tiles on the top set with the tiles on the bottom. There's one extra tile that doesn't belong on the play board and you just have to deal with it and try to work around it. This game is somewhat like juggling in that the tiles will spin in the air, and you have to shuffle them around in their correct places. As you progress, the puzzles become more and more complex and will increase in difficulty. Aliens on the screen make it difficult on you by trying to steal your tiles. They're not really a major factor in the game, merely a nuisance I'd say. The levels themselves don't change much, except for slightly different configurations and different backgrounds (which is the case with most puzzle games). Graphics are so-so, but nothing that couldn't be done on a Super Nintendo with a little bit of work. It's a bit on the fuzzy side and the colors are garish. The tunes are whimsical and compliment the game, but isn't anything that'll blow you away. Puzzle games in general are redundant, but you'll get tired of Flip Out a lot sooner than with top-notch titles such as Kirby's Avalanche, Klax or Bust-A-Move. Others who have tried the game thinks it's slightly better than what I think of it, but that's not saying much. Dull, mediocre, and yawn-inducing.
