AGH Atari 8-Bit Computer Review: CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN by Muse Software Castle Wolfenstein was one of the most popular games of 1982, as well as being a sort of computer game classic. The packaging even claims as such... "The most interactive game ever! The wildest, most addictive adventure game to date -- a genuine merger of fantasy and real-time arcade elements." And who's to argue? I really couldn't have said it better myself. Your objective is to try and get the Nazi war plans for Operation Rheingold and get out of the castle (the Nazi outpost) with them. The quest is beset with obstacles and pitfalls. You must get past guards and SS stormtroopers in order to get to the trunks containing the supplies vital to the success of your mission. Being quick on the trigger with your Maurer M-98 pistol is a necessity when the adversaries attempt to capture or kill you, or if you need to pass the enemy to get at the trunks, or if you simply need to take the supplies to fill your own needs. In order to move fast, you are limited to supplies of ten bullets, three grenades, a Nazi uniform for camuflage, and the war plans. Castle Wolfenstein has decent graphics, but there's a curious lack of color. The onscreen escapee doesn't look very good, but the guards and SS troopers are drawn very well. The finely detailed animation is excellent, especially in the case of the SS troopers, seen pacing back and forth when not in hot pursuit. Sound effects are good. You'll hear footsteps, explosions, gunshots and collisions with walls. There are even voices from Germans hot on your trail, as they yell at you to "Halt!" You win by escaping from the castle with the war plans. The player is then awarded a promotion from the Allied High Command. If the escapee is shot, blown up or caught, the player will continue in subsequent games in the same castle. At the beginning of each game, however, the player is given the option of generating a new castle. Play may be terminated at any time, simply by depressing the ESC key and the game will be saved on the diskette for the player to continue later. Castle Wolfenstein is an outstanding action/adventure game. Fans of this one should check out Beyond Castle Wolfenstein as well.
