XENOPHOBE by Atari For those who have no idea, the premise of the game is simple: walk from one side of the screen to the other killing aliens. The level ends when either all the aliens are killed (lotsa points for you), you trigger the self destruct and blow up the space station (less points for you), or you take too long and the aliens infest the station (no points for you, and a hearty smack from me if I catch you hiding in a corner waiting like a sniveling worm). After the level is completed, it is on to the next, for another round of alien-killing bliss. Mmmmmmmm . . . The arcade had three players at once, each with their own screen. THis version only can do two, but it ain't a big deal. The game remains essentially the same otherwise, with all the weapon powerups, grenades, random items to get, and all varieties of aliens here. Especially that tentacle thing that hangs from the ceiling. Oh, he'll rue the day he showed up here. Oh yes, he will . . . but I digress. Also, the space stations have many different floors to them (some have three, some six, etc), and you have to take an elevator between floors, which adds a little challenge when you're trying to hunt down that last dang alien thing, but makes the game challenging enough to keep playing. And when you get down to it, its really hard for any two player co-op games to be really bad. Graphically the game is pretty good. Not as colorful as the arcade, and you can't pick your character, but most of the humurous touches (read the signs) are intact, and everything looks good. Musically, alas, not much, and I think there are about three sound effects the whole game. But it's okay. Play the Tempest 2000 CD while playing. It fits well. All in all, a good game, and a fun two player experience. Buy, says me.
