IKARI WARRIORS by Atari
The game is played from a top down perspective, which gives you full view of the action. You walk forward as evil commie pig dogs arrive from the top of the screen to pepper you with bullets and grenades and such. Your only savior? The sweet tanks scattered around. Get in one of these babies, and you can really put a bruise on Mao's ego, lemme tell ya!!
The graphics are very good, with a lot of stuff going on at the same time. I actually prefer this one to the other versions I've played, because the forced scrolling of the arcade is gone, allowing you to pace yourself a little more. It might have taken away some of the nailbiting intensity, but made the game more fun, because now I can take the time to smell their fear. There are lots of different objects, like helicopters, bunkers, statues, ect., all of which can be destroyed. Good, good stuff. I think the Nintendo version looked better, but that game was damn glitchy, and I hate that. Graphically a good job. The gameplay is beautiful, because it is so simple. You and a buddy (two playa baby!!) can use machine guns,grenades,and tanks to take care of business. The arcade had a nifty rotating controller allowing the player to aim one way and walk another. The console versions struggled with this at times, but this port does a good job of replicating that trick, although it takes a while to get used to. This game is just fun, even after you've beaten it at every skill level a thousand times. I love games like this. If I could just get my hands on Commando... The music is okay. Blippy, as are most 7800 games, but the tune is sort of recognizable from the arcade. Sound effects are bland, but the game is good enough that it doesn't matter. On a side note, the guy who programmed the music went on to make Pete Rose Baseball. Wierd, huh? Anyways, get this game...
