AGH Atari 7800 Review:
DESERT FALCON

by Atari

Desert Falcon
This game is a blatant mockery of Zaxxon, but hey, that's alright, since Zaxxon was such a phat game. Why they didn't just make Zaxxon, I'll never know, but oh well . . . In the tradition of weird-ass Atari game plots, in this one you're a falcon who wants to get treasure from Egypt, so you can fly around and shoot stuff, all the while picking up treasure. Why a falcon and not a California Condor I'll never know. Man, those are some big birds . . . we should probably use them to fly en masse to Egypt, pick it up, and then drop it on Canada so we can finally bring home the gold in Curling.

Like a said, this game plays like Zaxxon, with that fake 3D isometric viewpoint thingie in full effect. Not a bad game to copy, but in this game it's kind of hard to judge distance from the ground, so you'll have a hard time shooting enemies while they're flying. They have shadows, but the shadows don't change in relation to their height, which is kind of bogus. You're falcon can also land and walk around, which is cool if you wanna get a breather from all the random enemies around, most of which look like kites for some reason. Another neat aspect in the game is that you can collect heiroglyphics to attain powerups. There are lots of different glyphs, and different combinations getcha different results, like super shot, or invinciblity, or warp, etc. Very neat addition to the game, and it gives it a little strategy. When you get to the end of a level, you gotta fight a cool looking sphinx thing, and when it is destroyed you go on to the next. Every level looks kind of the same, with a different color scheme and objects moved around.

Graphics are nice, with a lot of variety in stuff, and the enemies all look good. The sphinx guy looks cool, too. Pretty good for the 7800. Not really any music, but there are a good variety of sound effects, and none are annoying except the one when you're floating on water. I hate that one.

A good game, and the only one like it for the 7800. Get it, says me...
