BALLBLAZER by Atari What the game boils down to is one on one soccer, but in a really cool way. You and an opponent are in hovercrafts stuck alone in a big field, out for each other's lives. Well, points actually. You drive around your vehicle and try to get the floating glowing ball thingy through your goal before your opponent does the same. You craft can shoot blasts of air which serve both and offensive and defensive purpose: To shoot the ball through the goalposts, and to steal said ball from your hapless foe.
The game is great. It's very smooth and fast, and isn't as easy as it sounds. You see, as the game progresses (you can set the time limits), the goalposts start to move closer together. Uh oh . . . and that really adds some flava because you can score different points depending on your distance from the posts. (1, 2, or 3 (which is the uber shot). So when the posts start cramming together you'll want to get up close to ensure a better chance of shooting, but on the other hand there's only thirty seconds left and you're behind by three. What do ya do, punk? Such is the joy of this game. While it might sound hard to find the ball, the game has a neat way around any first person confusion. Your hovercraft automatically turns to face the ball. A little disorienting at first, but after a while it is completely intuitive. Graphics are good, and provide a 3d feel to everything. Not many objects to play with, but everything looks really good. Simple but colorful shapes abound. A very innovative games in terms of both looks and gameplay (way better than the crappy playstation version). As said before, the opening music is neat, but the in game tune is just some random sounds. Still okay though, and the sound effects are all good, especially when the loser self destructs. This game is one of the greats, I'll tell ya . . . one of my favorites as a little tyke.
