AGH Atari 2600 Review:
TURMOIL

by Fox Video Games

Turmoil
Believe it of not, not all games published by Fox were bad or poorly licensed games. Sure, the vast majority of Fox's 2600 library is pretty bland, but a few games manage to stray from the pack. One of those is Turmoil, a conversion of a popular computer game.

Simply put, Turmoil is a fast-paced shooter. You control a ship that can fire to the left or right side of the screen as you go up and down a hallway that is connected by corridors. Enemies come out of the side corridors and you have to shoot them. However, you can't stay in one place for too long, because if you do, an enemy (that you cannont destroy) will force you to get moving again. Also, a flashing dot may appear in one of the corridors. If you see it, you need to go in the corridor and quickly claim it, or else it'll transform into a bouncing ball that's difficult to shoot down.

The graphics are decent in the main screens, but the rolling color screen that appears before each level is pretty nifty. Plus, there's no flickering -- a rarity among 2600 action games. The sounds effects are above average, and the tune before the beginning of each level is particularly cool.

Overall, the action is fast-paced and exciting, and the added element of having to keep moving makes for an interesting challenge. Don't let the Fox brand name fool you. After all, Data Age (makers of some wretched "games") also made Frankenstein's Monster. Consider Turmoil as Fox's diamond in the rough.
