AGH Atari 2600 Review: SURROUND
by Atari
Surround is another early but enjoyable title from
Atari. If you've seen the movie light-cycle sequence in the movie
Tron, you'll know what to expect (keep in mind that Surround
came before Tron, so it's a genuine original and not a knock-off
of Tron the game.) In the play field there are two boxes at each
end of the screen. As the boxes begin moving, they create a stream
(i.e. tracks) behind them. The object is to make your opponent run
into your stream while avoiding his stream and the outer boundary
of the playfield. Each time your opponent hits a stream or wall,
you get a point. The first to ten points wins the game.
Surround offers 14 different game options to choose from. They
include one-or-two player options, no walls, and a type of panic
option where as the game goes on, you begin progressively moving
faster. However, the computer isn't very smart or challenging, so
Surround is best enjoyed as a two-player experience. The graphics
and sound are pretty basic, but what matters is the gameplay.
Surround is a satisfying head-to-head game that is bound to offer
memorable battles.
