AGH Atari 2600 Review:
COCONUTS

Coconuts
You've all played Kaboom!, right? Now how about trying out Anti-Kaboom? In Coconuts, you basically have to dodge the objects falling from the top of the screen instead of having to catch them. You take control of Stanley I. Presume who's an unfortunate victim of a monkey-led coconut attack from overhead. Stanley must dodge falling coconuts from above while trying to keep his cool and drive the monkeys bananas at the same time. You score points each time you avoid a coconut. That's about all there is to the game.

The playfield shows two simplistic renderings of palm trees, the brances of which hold the top half of Coco, the crazy monkey. Mr. Presume, dressed in a safari/jungle garb and clutching an umbrella firmly in hand, scampers below the monkey, who can be sitting on top of either of the two palm trees. It's a very simple game to learn and to play, even at its highest difficulty setting. And since there is no return firing to be done, the work for the player is held to a minimum -- no fire button pressing is required and all you really do is move side to side, under one tree or another, making sure he doesn't get hit. Stan begins the game well-equipped, but when he's hit the second time his hat disappears. At the point where the pplayer accumulates 500 points the last equipment piece lost by Stanley is returned to him. Same thing happens at 1500 points. The game is over when Stan takes a direct hit to the head.

Coconuts is obviously designed with the novice or child player in mind. It's not overly complex, stress level is low and the possible maneuvers are limited. Those players who are more experienced and familiar with many types of video game play will probably find this game rather uninteresting after a couple of plays. However, it's a decent introductory game for younger gamers (let's say about 7 and under) who have yet to learn the skills of defensive gaming action.
