AGH Atari 2600 Review:
ASTEROIDS

by Atari

Asteroids
You take control of a spaceship and battle both gravity enemies (floating Asteroids and flying saucers) in a fight to stay alive. The 2600 port of the classic coin-op has lost some of its luster during the translation project (as you'd expect), most prominently in the graphics department. Here, the sharp vector graphics has been replaced with a colorful raster-graphics playfield.

Control is much easier to master with the 2600 joystick when compared to the button-laden arcade controls, but purists will scoff at the trade-off. Even amateur gamers will master 2600 Asteroids in no time, cutting into the replay value of an otherwise solid port.

As an arcade-to-2600 translation, it's an admirable effort. But given that versions on newer consoles offer far more faithful renditions of Asteroids, this edition is probably one that won't be getting lots of playing time from its owners.
