ADAM BICKERS'S TOP TEN ATARI CONSOLE AND COMPUTER GAMES

awb198@soton.ac.uk

I stumbled across your website whilst trying to find some cheats for my Jaguar games. It's nice to see there are still people who are supporting Atari consoles, old and new. I've been playing on Atari consoles since I was 4 years old and I have defended the faith ever since, so here's my top 10.

10. Atlantis

(2600/Imagic)
A very addictive shoot 'em up. Colourful, fast and when you hit the little ships...strobe lighting all the way!
9. Stampede
(2600/Activision)
I think this game is hilarious. Pure fun that always leaves wanting to try and beat your high score one more time.
8. Phoenix
(2600/Atari)
This was the first video game I ever played. I would spend hours at my cousins house on his 2600 with this game. We got to the point where we could clear the screen in seconds, one shot per alien.
7. Blue Lightning
(Lynx/Epyx)
I will always argue that this is ten times better than the Jaguar version. There might not be FMV every five minutes but the game play and graphics are so smooth. Hitting the afterburners on the canyon run is always a good way to get an adrenaline rush.
6. Dig Dug
(2600/Atari)
Another great example of a fun addictive game the way they used to make them. It's worth it just to see those monster swell up and burst when you stick the pump in them.
5. Xenophobe
(Lynx/Atari)
A game with a great sense of humour. It's almost like a spoof hybrid of Aliens and Star Wars. This has got to be one of the best hand held games ever.
4. Cosmic Ark
(2600/Imgaic)
This game oozes playability. The only way to succeed is to rely on reactions. I always get a real buzz in the asteroid field when they are hurtling towards the "Arc" at the 200mph. Hesitate for a nanosecond and bang, you've lost everything.
3. Enduro
(2600/Activision)
Another game that relys entirely on reflexes. The speed is incredible. Enduro was really state of the art with different weather conditions and night racing. I've been playing it for years and I've still only managed to get to day 4.
2. Aliens Vs. Predator
(Jaguar/Atari)
This game along with Tempest 2000 should have made the Jaguar an instant hit. The graphics are still incredible despite the advances made in recent years. This is probably the most absorbing game I've ever played. It really is a like simulation, you could be there. I had never jumped whilst playing a game before, but when those aliens started jumping out at me I became a nervous wreck.
1. Tempest
(Jaguar/Atari)
Jeff Minter should be worshipped as the King of Games programming. T2K is a classic in its own right. I've played this game so much I know the soundtrack by heart. Speed, colour, explosions, wierd voices, wierd monsters, wierd bonus stages and a hypnotic soundtrack. Jeff took one of the best coin-ops ever and turned it into one of the best console games ever. I doubt anything will surpass T2K in terms of playability and sheer intensity. The legacy of Atari continues...
