1982-1984 The Atari 2600 was so dominant in the early 1980s that even rival hardware companies gave in and produced games for the system. Mattel was one of them, and beginning in late 1982, they released a slew of games that were mostly (watered-down) Intellivision ports under the M-Network moniker. They dropped the name and used the Mattel Electronics label instead for their later releases such as Burgertime and Bump 'N Jump. Most of M-Network's Intellivision's conversions had different titles on the VCS. Major League Baseball was renamed Super Challenge Baseball on the Atari; Frog Bog became Frogs And Flies; and Astrosmash was changed to Astroblast. A few titles, however, remain unchanged (Star Strike and Lock 'N Chase come to mind), while others like Burgertime and Bump 'N Jump couldn't be altered for obvious reasons. On the whole, the Atari versions were inferior to their Intellivision counterparts. A handful of conversions, however, offered gameplay that was superior. Frogs And Flies and Lock 'N Chase benefitted from the tighter controls enabled by the 2600 joystick, while others like Space Attack played much faster than the Intellivision version. One game, Kool-Aid Man, was initially only offered by Mattel and Kool-Aid as a special promotion to customers of the soft drink of the same name. It was later sold in stores, however, thereby making it less collectible than it otherwise might have been (like Chase the Chuckwagon, for instance). M-Network carts are (and have been) a thorn on the side of gamers and collectors alike in that its cartridge shape is such that it is impossible to stack them on top of each other like just about every other 2600 cart. Furthermore, artwork on the carts are nonexistent, consisting of nothing more than an end label with the title in blue or black text along with a copyright notice. Boooooooring!
