Talk about a company that would do anything to make a
quick buck. Shortly after Data Age went into bankruptcy due
to a substandard library of titles and royalty payments
owed to the rock group Journey for their game "Journey
Escape," Game World quickly snatched up the rights to
the games and released them in Europe at discounted prices
under their own label.
Initially, however, it appears that Game World planned
on selling the games in the U.S. as well. They were
in full force at the 1984 Winter CES show with their
products and catalog on display. All of their titles
were unchanged from the Data Age ones, with one exception.
They renamed Journey Escape to Rock 'N Roll Escape
for obvious reasons.
One of the more interesting tidbits surrounding
Game World was that they shared the same address in
Los Angeles, CA as Universal Gamex... the
company that responsible for the adult game X-Man!
It is conceivable, therefore, that after X-Man failed to make
a dent in the marketplace, Gamex decided to change its name and
release mainstream titles at deeply discounted prices.
