1982-1984
In 1982, CBS joined the 2600 publishing fray, hoping to grab a chunk of
the then-large video game pie by introducing high-profile arcade
licenses and games, some of which were claimed to triple the capacity
of the Atari 2600. On the arcade front, they released five video
Bally/Midway coin-op translations: Gorf,
Wizard of Wor, Blue Print,
Omega Race and Solar Fox.
Tunnel Runner was a first person perspective maze game
that utilized the RAM+PLUS chip, a technology which
significantly increased the RAM of the 2600, resulting in high
resolution graphics. Mountain King was also outfitted with
RAM+PLUS, and it was universally praised by magazines with its large
playfields, deep and complex gameplay and remarkable graphics.
Although CBS fizzled along with most of the other publishers as a
result of the video game crash, they left their mark as one of the
most dynamic and well-respected 2600 game publishers during the
classic videogame era.
NOTE: CBS also distributed Coleco-made 2600 carts in Europe.
